When a bridge and Neck Pickup have the same name, are they the same pickup?

Basically I want to know if the difference in sound between the neck and bridge pickups comes from the pickup itself or the position against the strings.
For instance if I want a pair of Gibson ’57 Classics in my guitar, do I need one specifically for the neck and one for the bridge? Or can I buy 2 and put ‘em anywhere?

Yes, there is a difference. Bridge pickups are typically hotter than neck pickups. There is less string vibration at the bridge and the pickup needs to be more powerful to amplify them. When you install your pickups, you should balance them. Factory settings are normally for factory pickups. If you are installing aftermarket pickups, or specifically 1 aftermarket pickup you may see that you need to make adjustments.
Its best to use factory specs for the Bridge Pickup and then adjust the neck pickups height accordingly. If you use a bridge pickup in the neck area, you may find that you have to lower it very deep to achieve a balanced volume between the two.
