Transport Issues In The Steel Industry

Steel fabrication is big business. The economic growth being enjoyed by developing countries is pushing demand for steel to heights it hasn’t reached in decades. The metal is commonly used as an indicator for economic growth since it plays an integral part in so many modern applications. Millions of tons of steel are produced each year with global revenue amounting to billions of dollars.

 

One of their more popular products is steel bands and straps. Consumers like buying them because it allows the steel to be easily worked and integrated in a variety of projects. It enjoys heavy circulation in industries as diverse as shipping, architecture, engineering, art and construction. It is also the preferred material for industrial repair and DIY enthusiasts.

 

Steel straps were traditionally sold in giant bails of wound metal. Each roll would contain thousands of feet worth of material. Its weight would typically reach hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds. These were shipped all over the world to individual distributors and direct customers.

 

The extremely large sizes that the straps were sold in presented several problems. First of all, it was difficult to transport because each one required heavy-duty equipment just to get it on a truck. Storage was also a problem; only large dedicated warehouses had the space necessary to hold an adequate number of the bails. Finally, the volume of each product made it an unfeasible purchase for people who did not require such large amounts of metal banding. In response, the modern steel pony coil was developed by the steel industry to address these problems.

 

Steel pony coils are small, tightly wound packages of steel straps. Each one only contains two hundred to three hundred feet of material. They are extremely portable and weigh between eight to eighteen pounds depending on the relative thickness of the band.

 

A steel pony coil has many advantages over the conventional giant metal roll. No longer do you need to rely on a forklift to move one around. You are free to just pick one up with your hand and throw it on your car’s backseat. It’s a lot cheaper to transport because of the significantly smaller size; shipping and handling costs are considerably reduced. It is also easier to store because of its convenient shape.  In addition, more sales can be generated because of the consumer friendly dimensions.
