10 Interesting Facts About The Fender Stratocaster Guitar   by Eduardo Munroe

There is no getting away from it, the Fender Stratocaster Guitar has without doubt performed an important part in helping to shape music over the years. We have seen a number of significant guitarists choosing the Stratocaster as their instrument of choice including: Jimi Hendrix, Hank Marvin, Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughan and many more.

Below are 10 facts about these world altering guitars:

1. The Stratocaster was created by Leo Fender, Freddie Tavares and George Fullerton in 1954.

2. The seriously contoured double-cutaway body was created from Ash until the middle of 1956 when Alder had become the hardwood of choice for the body. Alder is still used to this day.

3. The first 1954 model showcased a 1-piece maple neck with 21 frets. Inlays were black dots.

4. The guitar originally arrived pre-loaded with Kluson Machine Heads. These were often changed for other brands over time as guitar players often have particular machine heads they can’t live without.

5. The guitar pickups selector switch was formerly a 2-position unit which luckily was updated to a 5-position type in 1977. This granted much better versatility when selecting pickup permutations and tones.

6. The volume from the Stratocaster pickups is controlled by a single master volume knob.

7. The three single-coil pickups installed in the guitar used to be originally identical in design and style. 1977 saw the roll-out of the RWRP (reverse wound reverse polarity) middle pickup, which when linked with either the neck or the Bridge Pickup could perform in hum-cancelling mode. This went some way to making the sometimes noisy pickups quieter, and helped the guitars compete with the less noisy humbucking pickups supplied with Gibson guitars. Gibson have been and still are great rivals of Fender.

8. The guitar was built using a rosewood fretboard as standard from the years between 1959 to 1967.

9. 1965 saw CBS take over the Fender brand and for many folks, it was the start of many years of poorer quality instruments. The company gradually upped their game but many followers had been lost on the way.

10. In 1982 an inexpensive model of the guitar began production in Japan under the ‘Squier’ name. This was for many people an affordable way of owning a Fender Guitar minus the higher, USA made cost.

So there are my 10 important facts about these amazing guitars. Whether a Stratocaster is your guitar of preference, there is absolutely no denying the spectacular effect that this 50′s guitar has had on the music industry.
