Steel Guitar
Can you play a (lap) steel guitar as a regular guitar?

I hear that steel guitars have remarkable sustain, which is something you’d be lucky to find in a normal guitar, so my question is this… Can you play a steel guitar as a regular guitar?

No, you can’t. Technically you could, but it would next to impossible. Lap steel guitars are meant to be played with a slide, so the action (height of the strings) is very high, too high to play as a regular guitar.

Steel Guitar Heart Attack

Steel Guitar Heart Attack

$10.38

The title of this album might lead you to expect something along the lines of rowdy honky tonk country music. But no. Instead, what you get is a sweet-natured, generally kind of laid-back exploration of Texas swing, big-band jazz and vintage pop songs, along with a smattering of bongos and the occasional hint of a Hawaiian luau. From the relaxed, almost decorous version of “Idaho” that opens the program to the gleefully rollicking rendition of “The Fishin’ Hole” that closes it, Steel Guitar Heart Attack offers plenty of good swinging fun, but most of it is delivered at tempos that can only be called modest. And there’s nothing wrong with that, especially when guest singer Neko Case is crooning her way through an all-too-brief version of “East of the Sun (And West of the Moon)” or Rachel Flotard is bringing a surprisingly touching shading of gently resigned heartbreak to “Harbor Lights.” There are even a couple of TV themes, believe it or not — a wacky rendition of the theme from “Mannix” — and that album-closing take on “Fishin’ Hole,” which most will recognize as the theme from the Andy Griffith Show but which, it turns out, is actually a real song with lyrics. Are there missteps? Yes, a couple — Jon Rauhouse is a great guitarist but only a passable banjo picker, and his two banjo showcases fall rather flat. Everything else on this album, though, is a hoot and a joy. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi Performers: Kelly Hogan – Singer, Vocals; Mike Bulington – Singer, Vocals; Scott Ligon – Singer, Vocals; Chris Schultz – Choir, Chorus; Craig Schumacher – Choir, Chorus; Idaho Choir – Vocals (Background); John Convertino – Choir, Chorus, Drums; Jon Rauhouse – Hawaiian Guitar, Lap Steel Guitar, Banjo, Pedal Steel, Choir, Chorus, Guitar (Rhythm), Drums, Vocals;

Steel Guitar Rodeo

Steel Guitar Rodeo

$10.38

Jon Rauhouse, Tommy Connell, and friends are back for another round of feel-good Hawaiian, country, and Western swing, coming on like a modern-day Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant. This is no stale homage to styles gone by; this is living, breathing music performed with such ease and aplomb that you can’t help but enjoy it. They can even take material from outside the tradition like “Smoke Rings” (Les Paul & Mary Ford, Dajngo Reinhardt) and “White Cliffs of Dover” (Vera Lynn, Louis Prima) and fit them nicely alongside Rauhouse originals. And from even further outside the tradition, you’ve got “Perry Mason Theme” and Raymond Scott’s classic “Powerhouse.” Several Bloodshot stalwarts (Neko Case, Sally Timms, Kelly Hogan) pay Rauhouse back for his myriad guest shots, supplying some vocals to this largely instrumental set. Put this on at your next summer party, and you won’t be able to wipe the smiles off peoples’ faces. ~ Sean Westergaard, Rovi Performers: Bradford Hutchinson – Banjo; Craig Schumacher – Vox Continental, Vocals (Background); Jon Rauhouse – Hawaiian Guitar, Vocals (Background), Mandolin, Banjo, Pedal Steel, Vocals, Guitar; Nick Luca – Marimba, Piano; Andy Hopkins – Guitar (Electric); Howe Gelb – Vocals, Piano; Jacob Valenzuela – Trumpet; Jennie Benford – Mandolin, Guitar;

Classic Hawaiian Steel Guitar 1933-1934

Classic Hawaiian Steel Guitar 1933-1934

$12.78

A very influential Hawaiian steel guitarist in the 1920s and ’30s, Sol Hoopii considered himself a jazz and blues player rather than a Hawaiian stylist. His recorded solos in 1925 put him at the beginning of the jazz guitar’s evolution on record along with Eddie Lang. Although not often cited as an influence, when one hears his records, it becomes obvious that he greatly influenced the steel guitarists of Western swing in the 1930s and ’40s. During 1933-1934, Hoopii made his last recordings on acoustic steel guitar before permanently switching to electric steel guitar in 1935. All 24 of the formerly very rare selections from those sessions are on this very well-conceived set which has extensive and colorful liner notes. Featured in a quartet with guitar, ukulele and bass, Hoopii takes some of the Hawaiian vocals that are heard on the majority of these selections although there are occasional instrumentals. While the repertoire is mostly outside of jazz (best known are Irving Berlin’s “An Orange Grove in California,” “I Like You,” and “My Little Grass Shack in Kealakeekua”) with “Lady Be Good” being the only jazz standard, the guitar solos are impressive throughout and the music swings. Hoopii deserves to be much better known. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

Lute-Guitar, Steel, Variegated, Gears

The steel string lute-guitar is an attractive and lightweight instrument of a similar size and scale to a standard classical guitar but with a body like a lute. In keeping with the character of a lute, the bowl-shaped body is achieved by edge-gluing together staves of uniformly thin hardwoods bent to a specific shape with no heavy internal bracing to retain its form. The bowl is made of two alternating woods: Lacewood (Platanus orientalus) is a light-colored hardwood that has color similar to maple and has distinctive rays that provide what is known as a "beeswing" pattern. A member of the sycamore family, its timbre characteristics are similar to maple generally providing a brighter tone than rosewood. The dark-colored wood is sheesham rosewood (Dalbergia sissoo) that affords a warmer mellower tone. The combination of the two offers a blended timbre as well as a desirable look. European spruce is used for the soundboard and, in keeping with the design of 16th-Century lutes, its soundhole is a carved rosette in an attractive geometric pattern which is cut into the soundboard itself and is not inlaid of different material. Most exciting is that the soundboard bracing pattern follows bracing used in world-famous Kohno classical guitars. The mahogany neck has a shape is similar to a classical guitar with a 45mm wide nut of ebony. The top of the peg box has a woman's head carved on the top. Using standard steel classical guitar strings, it is tuned like a guitar in e, b, G, D, A, E tuning. If it is to be used for lute music, the 3rd string may be tuned a semi-tone down to F# to enable lute fingering. The guitar is outfitted with smooth-operating gold tuners with black ebonized tuning key buttons. The overall length is 1030mm and the scale length is 647mm, similar to a normal guitar. Satin lacquer finish. Height: 18 Width: 0 Weight: 48

Sheesham rosewood is a medium to dark-brown hardwood and is highly sought after in furniture and musical instrument making. In his brief liner essay, Kim Simmonds — whose name is synonymous with Savoy Brown, having founded the group and been its only constant member — says that this record is a return to basics without artifice, gimmicks, or varnish. OK. Fair enough. But if this is back to the raw blues for Simmonds and company on his millionth album, then why does it sound so polished? Steel’s sound is very clean, and its approach to songs is, too — the Lowell Fulsom tune “Monday Morning Blues” that opens the set is all but unrecognizable, having had all of its tough R&B and soul taken away to create a guitar wanker’s trio approach. There’s plenty of wah-wah, speaking of no artifice. Savoy’s rumbling slide guitar craziness of old is back on Simmonds’ boogie “Long as I’ve Got You,” with its stinging slide guitar and plenty of amplifier distortion. The guitarist, who also functions — unfortunately — as the band’s vocalist (what one wouldn’t give for a Chris Youlden or Lonesome Dave Peverett up front instead of this monotone monotony), wrote or co-wrote six of the ten cuts here. “You Don’t Do Thing for Me” is more of a rock tune à la Rod Stewart and Ronnie Lane than a Savoy boogie. It’s a great cut, though. The reading of Pee Wee Crayton’s “Daybreak” is musically commendable for the soft-handed touch Simmonds took with the verse — though the guitar screams elsewhere — but the vocal is so drenched in drudgery that it feels more like the tune should be called “Hungover Daybreak.” Ultimately, if you are a fan of Savoy Brown, and this means a die-hard fan since there have been so many changes with the band, this just may be the return to form you were looking for — but Jack the Toad, Hellbound Train, or Getting to the Point this ain’t. Everybody else will continue to celebrate Simmonds’ ability with a guitar while longing for a real vocalist to recharge this blues-rock dinosaur. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Dennis Cotton – Drums; Kim Simmonds – Guitar, Vocals; Ron Keck – Percussion
