What brand of guitar strings are really good?

Hey, I might need to replace the strings on my electric soon. I’m a total n00b when it comes to Guitar String quality. What’s a good quality of guitar string that is made for an electric guitar?

There are literally hundreds of strings out there. It comes down to how they sound and feel on your guitar.

A lot of folks around here seem to like Ernie Ball strings, and they are certainly reasonably priced. However, there’s something about my body chemistry and the alloys they use in their strings where they go dead on me in just a couple of hours of playing. D’Addario’s, however, tend to last a lot longer for me, so that’s what most of my guitars get.

If you have a Fender with a tremolo on it, I’d recommend putting Fender Super Bullets on it. They have a special shaped ball on the string that sits well in the tremolo block, and solves a lot of tuning stability issues.

Beyond that, I’d just say try a few different sets to see what you like.

And unless you have a reason to do otherwise, I’d say keep the same string gauge on the guitar. When you change the string gauge, you also have to adjust the intonation and Truss Rod on the guitar.

Coh: Strings $18.67 This is Stockholm-based Ivan Pavlov’s (COH) fifth release for Raster Music. Born in Russia, Ivan Pavlov lives and works in Sweden. He is an inimitable acoustic sound researcher, with a decade of work that combines beautifully minimal electronics with surrealist, abstract humor. Strings is primarily an attempt to reconcile the aesthetics of digital sound with that of more traditional musical instruments and to enrich their respective domains with certain qualities that each singularly possesses. On a larger scale, the album targets the stereotypes in today’s perception of music, trying to smooth out the borders between academic and popular, traditional and contemporary, serious and amusing — all in favor of music. The choice of instrumentation on Strings (piano, guitar, saz, and oud) follows COH’s own experience in music: from his years of piano lessons as a child, to playing in a heavy metal band during his teenage years, further to his most recent years of work in the area of digital sound and composition. Part I uses recordings made with a Yamaha grand piano in 2001, part II uses an electric guitar purchased in the USSR in 1988, and part III was first recorded as a quadraphonic installation piece and is inspired by the improvised recordings of saz and oud played by Andrej Abu Kolesov.

Touch Strings $15.18 As its title implies, Touch Strings culls works for or involving string instruments. This two-CD set fits squarely in Phill Niblock’s œuvre: fans will not be surprised (or disappointed), and detractors will not be changing their minds. There are at least two ways to experience Niblock’s music. One is to stick to the surface and find in his lengthy drones (“Stosspeng” is a full hour long) a calm, static, introspective music that can provide the ultimate background for meditation. The other is to turn up the volume and immerse yourself in it (no headphones though, never with Niblock) to explore his near-infinte world of incremental changes engineered through the use of quasi-unisons obtained from multiple octaves and multi-tracking near identical notes, and the flapping effects they produce. His soundworld is in constant flux — a slow, hypnotic movement that happens as much within the listener as between the loudspeakers. Disc one is entirely devoted to “Stosspeng.” Here, Niblock is using drone samples from Susan Stenger (guitar) and Robert Poss (bass) to build a very quiet and delicate one-hour piece ranking among his most enjoyable to simply listen to. Disc two features to shorter pieces: “Poure” (24 minutes) and “One Large Rose” (46 minutes). “Poure” is built from multi-tracked samples provided by cellist Arne Deforce. Here we have less flapping and more grating, as tones are separated enough to be clearly perceived as out of tune. The piece remains sedate and majestic, but its texture is unnerving and disquieting, awaiting a resolution that will never happen. “One Large Rose” takes a different path to reach a similar goal: The Nelly Boyd Ensemble (cello, piano strummed with nylon strings, violin, acoustic bass guitar strummed with nylon strings or e-bow) is heard performing a 45-minute score of microtones four times, each take having been recorded throughout, and each time the musicians playing a different set of microtones. Whereas the other tracks feature a lot of post-recording work (altering tones, layering, etc.), here Niblock limited his interventions to lining up the takes and mixing them to stereo. The piece starts rather angelic and very gradually builds up to a gritty form of atonality. Strings Attached $9.58 Although this is technically a set featuring cornetist Peter Ecklund with strings, there is actually no real string section. The “strings” include (on various tracks) guitarists Frank Vignola, Chris Flory, Molly Mason, and Marty Grosz, bassists Greg Cohen and Murray Wall, violinist Jay Ungar, banjoist Cynthia Sayer, and Kenny Kosek on mandolin, plus Scott Robinson on various reeds, Lenny Pickett on clarinet and tenor sarrusophone (!), and drummer Richard Crooks.
